Talking with the Twins

“WIH-WAH!” she shouts as she points at a picture of a toddler Violet.

“No, honey, that’s Violet, not Willa.”

“No!  WIH-WAH!  WIH-WAH!  WIH-WAH!  Awww, pih-iy!”

“Yes, she is pretty.  But it’s Violet,”

“WIH-WAH pih-iy!”

“Yes, you are pretty.”

And I give up trying to explain that Willa is pointing at a picture of Violet,  She’s not going to change her mind and Violet isn’t home to feel slighted, so this is a battle I’d rather not have.

The twins are becoming more and more verbal in the last few weeks, which is both exciting and stressful because they totally want to be understood when they speak.  If you’ve ever lived with a toddler, you know that they are going to repeat what they’re saying over and over and over and over until you either confirm it or reply appropriately.

And they understand what an appropriate response should be.  So if they say, “Co!” and you ask them if they want more milk, they look at you like your face is on inside out because they are clearly asking for a coat, duh.  You didn’t get that from “Co!”

The other thing about talking toddlers is that everything they say is said with an exclamation point.  Everything,

“No!”

“More!”

“Pah-ee!”  (Potty).

“No!”

“Mine!”

“Go!”

“Peh-puls!”  (Pretzels).

“No!”

Multiply that by two and you’re livin’ the dream, baby!

Even though Scott has spent quite a bit of time with our kids when they were toddlers, he’s always had a harder time understanding what they were saying than I have, so I serve as main translator.  Part of me wonders if I should totally pull his leg and do that whole “translate completely wrong” joke and have him running in circles.  I think I’ll file that one away for April Fool’s Day.

In the mean time, I’ve got to brush up on toddler-ese because it sounds like Wih-wah! didn’t fall asleep during nap today.

    • Thank you! Thank goodness their cuteness outweighs their toddlerness…
